The first impression that you will have of Kurenai would be that she is a confident and self-assured individual – her bearing and actions says it all. She usually has smile on her face and is generally approachable. But for those who has known her for some time would notice that the smile is a little ‘off’. Whenever someone asks her about her family (not including her parents and siblings) or her background, she will tense up and give a short, curt answer and look for an opportunity to change the subject as quickly as she could.
The fact that she is skilled in aikido and the naginata is not a widely known fact but for the more observant and those who have experience with martial arts, they would quickly notice that she is trained in martial arts by the way she moves. This is because she moves with the least and most efficient movements possible.
As for her style, she prefers clean lines and simple cuts. She leans towards subdued colors, though she prefers blacks and whites to others. Her usual clothing when she practices her ATs consists of a pair of jeans, topped with a tank top and a hoodie over it. She only wears more feminine articles of clothing when she is out with her school friends.

Kurenai acts the proper lady, as befitting her family and position. Perfectly poised and every word and action controlled, it takes quite a bit to be able to make her lose her composure. She always has a kind word and a smile ready for her peer and is ready to offer a helping hand if they ever needed it. Good in both studies and athletics, all in all, it seemed that Kurenai lived the ideal life.
But beneath her seemingly perfect veneer is a girl who is terribly insecure. Though she is surrounded by friends, there is not one that Kurenai considers close. She is constantly worried that everyone would dislike her if they discover that she is not the ‘perfect’ individual she projects. So, she keeps everyone around her at a distance. It is safe to say that it is hard to earn her respect, but even harder to earn her trust.
Due to her upbringing, Kurenai is a perfectionist and an overachiever, seeking to be the best in whatever she does. She also has a stubborn streak and it is almost impossible to change her mind once she has decided on a course of action. This side, combined with the fact that she hates losing means that she bites off more than she could chew at times.

Born into a traditional and revered family, Kurenai was brought up under the strict supervision of the Minamoto family from early on. As a part of such a respected family, Kurenai was pressured to excel and succeed since young. It did not help matters that her mother is an American and considered an ‘outsider’ by her father’s family. Though her parents married because they loved each other, it only brought about the disdain of the other family members as Alice Mathers was a ‘nobody’ in their eyes. Inheriting most of her coloring from her mother only made the family place only made it harder for Kurenai to gain their approval.
The demands and expectations were often unreasonable, especially on a child, but Kurenai dealt with them the best she could. Though she resented their biting remarks and cutting comments, it only made her work harder in order to show them that they were wrong about her. As positively as she took their remarks in stride, it took a toll on her inwardly and would serve as the framework for her present personality.
When Kurenai turned twelve, her father and mother moved to Tokyo to handle the family business there, leaving her under the care of her paternal grandparents. While they have more or less accepted Kurenai and her mother, they did not dote on her, though this was more because they were unused to expressing their emotions outwardly than anything else. The absence of her parents only made them pile more and more expectations on Kurenai.
To help her deal with the stress, Kurenai’s cousin bought her a pair of Air Trecks for her fifteenth birthday. Though she was uninterested in them at the beginning, Kurenai tried them to please him. But after her first time, she is hooked and began venture deeper into the world of AT.

She sat at the ledge of the building, her feet dangling over empty air. The streets were still filled with people – people who were rushing home after a tiring day at work, teenagers who were laughing and having fun with their friends. It never failed to astound her that in another hour, the streets would be empty, save for a drunkard or two. Kurenai felt the sides of her lips curving into a smile in anticipation.
The blond knew that her family would be livid if they knew, but it was already an addiction to her and like any addict, she could not resist its lure. It gave her a rush to watch other Stormriders battle one another, performing their tricks with seemingly effortless grace. It seemed as though they were defying gravity and ‘flying’ through the skies at times.
It was strange that she felt so strongly about something, but Kurenai knew that she wanted to be there, competing with the best of them. It was time to stop being a spectator.
