I decided that Kazu and Spitfire were my favourites early on (when Spitfire had his classic "But... it would appear he has a fatal weakness... HE SUCKS!!!" line, and when Kazu faced down the former leaders of the Gunz) and then it turned out really well when Kazu started running the Flame Road and became Spitfire's successor.

Akito/Agito get the third spot because together they add up to a great character, even if on their own each one of them wouldn't be in my top five.

For Ringo, well, I'm a sucker for the girl who really loves the hero but always keeps it inside, even when it's painful.

Ikki... well, sometimes Ikki can be really cool. Sometimes I find myself disliking him, but then sometimes I'll really dig what he says and does.

He looks at them as fools for killing each other over it. He finds their arrogance laughable, that they believe they have some kind of divine right to the sky regalia. That they think they have the right to change the world, when none of them have been outside of Tokyo and have done nothing with their lives. While he's been around the world and done more then any of them. They mention the sky regalia, on how they're going to control it. He just looks at them and quotes something like ("Those who seek absolute power, even though they seek it to do what they regard as good, are simply demanding the right to enforce their own version of heaven on earth. And let me remind you, they are the very ones who always create the most hellish tyrannies. A character like that is better off in FF:XII or Tenjou Tenge. The only people close enough to that in Air Gear are maybe Yoshitsune, Spitfire, Kilik, Rika, & Ringo. (I think)

Actually that character would fit in pretty well, the whole point of Air Gear is the pursuit of the Sky Regalia and its power. Having somebody who didn't believe in that would be a good counterbalance to it. When Spitfire was killed, I don't remember that one guy standing up and asking if the Sky Regalia was worth the life of a good man.
I'll give you Kilik but Yoshitune is nothing more then a fool, Sora and Nike murder Spitfire and he still goes along with them. If he had any real honor he would've stood against them. Spitfire was another pandering fool he followed Ikki and needed Ikki for his wings. The character I'm thinking of would have criticized Spitfire for such a thing. Ringo, well she gave up her freedom and tied herself to the tower, my dude would consider that foolish. That and he would be upset that she wasn't given the chance to live a happy normal life. He would be pissed that kids like her are being made to fight and die for nothing. My guy would see the only way to free everybody would be to destroy the tower and the Sky Regalia.
I wanted the guy who has the intelligence and fortitude to deal with any situation. Somebody who's seen the world and done a lot with his life, without relying on anybody or anything for his future but himself. Because of this he has a better understanding and a more complete view of things then anybody else in the manga. I think that guy could have fit in well, at least he would make a lot more sense then most of the characters in Air Gear.

He finds her "relationship" with Ikki disturbing and weird so he came up with the nickname S.O. which stands for Sex Offender. I kind of agree with him on that point with her being an adult woman and Ikki being underage. Don't take it personal I know you're a Simca fan, it's just a little fun on my part. Anyways I apologize to anybody the Sex Offender thing upsets. But you have to admit it's kind of creepy, it would be like Kilik going after Ringo.

There are popular main characters, too. You just have to look a little deeper than your generic shounens, since they all tend to have the annoying kind of main charas. If we're going to keep it in shounen, here's a few examples: Tsuna in Reborn! isn't exactly hated, neither is Raito (Well, maybe a little, but not even close to how much Near is hated). Oh, and Lelouch was fucking treated like a god.

I could list a huge amount of likable main characters for you if you want (Loran Cehack, Kyon, Hei/Li Shengsun, Simon from TTGL, Zetsubou-sensei, Revy, Shigeru Akagi, Isac Dian & Miria Harvent & Firo Prochainezo, Kazuki Mutou, Setsuna F Seiei....). So it's not that main characters themselves are hated for being the main focus of the story.
It's just that a huge amount of main characters are incredibly corny, clichéd, annoying and overpowered. Most of these are found in the shounen demographic, or in the battle genre.

People don't hate Ikki because he's the main character, they hate him because he's a douchebag. I mean seriously his character is loud obnoxious egotistical he's an ass. Eventually a character like that will grind on your nerves. The fact that he's mary sue as a muthafucka doesn't help either. My reason for hating his character besides the fact that he's a cliche douchebag, is that fact his character has no problem fighting women. I don't give a shit what started the fight with Ringo, the fact that he was willing to "crush" her was annoying. He also had no problem in attacking Rika inside the matrix. Kiric's character on the other hand, one of the most dangerous characters in Air Gear, wouldn't touch Emily because she was a girl. All he did was try and scare her when he could have ended her life at any moment, but he had honor. I hate male characters who attack women, no matter what the reasoning. Maybe it's how I was brought up, you know in believing that you don't ever hit a woman.

Well, Ikki isn't that innovative either. Nagi+Goku=Ikki. Just give Goku a leather jacket and Nagi's personality and hax, and we have Ikki.

And no, I don't like Kazu because he lacks self-confidence (which isn't that much of a issue anymore btw). I like him because his development. He started out as a pussy, and is now one of Koga's most important forces (at least battle-wise). The same reason why TTGL is great. It tells the story of a boy developing into a real man.

Actually, Lelouch did hax a few 'keikaku doori's here and there. But they were balanced out by the failures and losses he experienced. And they weren't in the style of Ikki's "Unstoppable wind WHOA!" And what made Lelouch good was that while Ikki's an annoying bastard, he was a magnificent bastard. Ikki screams he's God, Lelouch just smugly pulls an air of superiority. A little like Kiric, imo. Oh, and Lelouch was fabulous. Ikki takes a dump in front of women.

However the idiocy thing is a bad reason...all main shounen heroes who are idiots are geniuses/prodigies in their respective area's, they aren't stupid persay...they see the world in a different light

-Goku was a genius fighter who could mimic everything
-Naruto's iq doubles in battle for some reason
-Luffy isn't an idiot at all...the water 7 arc shows that he is VERY capable as captain and his crew respects the desicions he makes when he is serious, his converation with iceberg over the going merry is a good example of this
-Ikki has shown serveral moments that show he is not an idiot (potemkin fight,hitting Kilik with the shoe, the fact that he directly opposes an ideology fully aware of what it means)

PlotHAX aren't particularly real its just the main characters right to shine more that others..even if you have to exaggerate the scale of his abilities....but like i said it's fiction and it's O!G story if it went the path i liked there wouldn't be much reason to read =/

Intelligence doesn't make a great leader. Knowing what needs to be done, how to do it, and keeping confidence in those following you makes you a great leader. Luffy is simple as hell, but in Alabasta arc, he knew what needed to be done. Instead of running around trying to stop the rebellion by trying to make peace, go straight after Crocodile. That fixes everything. Ikki is a good leader as well. Goku and Naruto, not so much.

A CEO sexually harasses his secretary and he believes that his position allows him to get away with it.

A serial killer murders six people and believes he's smarter then the police and thinks he won't get caught.

In all of these scenarios each of these people believe their position makes them better or smarter then others. The truth, each person can and will be subject to the law. Just because they have position doesn't make them better then their victims or the law. The fact that they think they are is arrogance not confidence.

If you want a great example of arrogance google IL Gov. Rod Blagojevich. This is a perfect example of somebody who is extremely arrogant.

Well Kazu I think speaks more to the kids reading this manga then Ikki. Maybe it has to do with his insecurities, like most teenagers have. So they can identify with him. That's just a guess on my part.

I did a quick analysis of Simca a while back, she shows signs of a couple of different personality disorders and abandonment issues. I studied a little psych when I was in college.

I also think OG uses arrogance as a way for Ikki to deal with a situation he doesn't really know how to deal with.

Growing up in a house of girls who are almost completely dominate over him might have contributed to his narcissim. In that he needed to go out and prove his man hood (which by the way he's still doing) and upon finding out his strength against others he started to develop narcissistic traits. It only got worse after he started A-T's and everybody kissing his ass. All of that admiration only helped to reinforce Ikki's belief in his own superiority. Even with the betrayal of Sora, and even if it shattered his confidence. Once again everybody kissed his ass and he ended up with a new title and once again reinforced his belief system. Problem is with all of this feeding into his beliefs he's developed a "god complex". I might even be tempted to call him a megalomaniac, if he was real. I've way over analyzed this, I'm so fucking bored right now. But my analysis is probably way off, I haven't studied psych in years. Alright I need to find something else to do.
