Cosplay?

As the title suggests, this thread will be a place for general discussion of cosplay.

For those of you who don't know what it is, cosplay is derived from the words "costume" and "roleplay". It's essentially dressing up as a character from a video game or anime. While most popular in Japan, cosplay has found people worldwide. Common places not in Japan to see it would be at, for example, anime conventions. Costumes are either homemade or bought premade off the internet, and the difference between good quality costumes and bad is definitely noticeable.

I myself am new to it and am really enthused to be doing my first cosplay in April, at AnimeBoston 2008. I'll be dressing up as Mikami Teru, from DeathNote, also known as the 4th Kira. I've already bought a black shirt and red tie, as well as the men's suit I'll be wearing. The only thing left is to make sure my hair is the right length by next April, and to find someone able to help me style it accurately. I know I'm a girl cosplaying a guy, but I've read that it's common practice to tape the chest (being a girl is lame -_-"). And I also recently got a pair of thick framed plastic glasses.

girls have such a huge advantage in cosplaying =P

most anime guys are drawn with more femenine features, which girls can easily imitate, but the majority of guys have features too manly to capture the delicacy of a pretty boy like Kilik <3

I think the best byakuya (bleach) cosplay I've seen was done by a pretty girl O_o.

not to say that good male cosplayers don't exist, but it's far more common to see good female cosplayers.

^ I agree... We can see more female cosplayers... and guys who did it didn't turn out Wow and Aaw for me.... lolz...

I like those people who did their costume extremely well and detailed... I think I saw a guy dressed up as a doll before... But it was marvelous... Well, he had on thick makeups... real thick... and he was wrapped up in a big dress and a big wig plus a big hat... much like a gothic loli creepy doll i guess.. lolz..
But i can really see his effort in doing that... It turned out very well nonetheless... I think he won something... But it must be very hot for him... LOLZ... ^^

I'm planning on cosplaying Spitfire at Kumoricon in Sug/Sept. (Portland, OR) Going to be my fourth cosplay... I'm still trying to decide whether or not to try and get away with wearing roller blades inside the con center, or to mock something up... I'd have to mod the skates pretty heavily anyway. I'm surprised Spitfire doesn't get more cosplay love. It seems like the only AG character who gets cosplayed at all frequently is Akito/Agito... I wonder if it's the yaoi element ;;=_=

It's most likely Spitfire's hair which would turn many people away.
While Agito/Akito have normal, straight hair, Spitfire has highly styled and extremely difficult to replicate hair, which would either be a hit or miss after applying gel.
He is a handsome man though, nonetheless.

The thing is that he has a very large head circumference (23-24 inches) so buying a hat that'll fit him is a little more difficult
Thus, hats 4-7 may not be large enough, but we'll see
