My Review
(based on true events)
My journey seemed fruitless over many years, but I have finally found the best martial arts movie I have ever seen. Ip Man has left me awe stricken and amazed by its realism and very touching story. For those not in the know Ip Man is a grand master of Wing Chun and fostered several talented disciples such as Bruce lee whose style, Jeet Kune Do was derived from Wing Chun. I wasn’t very familiar with the star Donnie Yen before this film, all I saw him in were supporting roles in older films but after seeing Ip Man I can’t deny his genius. This movie deviates from fictionally lavish kung fu films and portrays a gritty realism (save for a few acrobatic moves) rarely seen in this genre which greatly enhances the style of the film. One aspect that really caught my attention was the explosive strength and speed in his chain punches and his very heroic sense of benevolence which I havnt seen since the Wong Fei Hung films which is a hero archetype i really enjoy watching. The soundtrack plays very well with the setting and really gets you into each scene whether it is a touching scene of Ip Man spending time with his son or a brutal fight with ten black belts. Ultimately this picture will make you feel extremely proud to be Chinese even if you aren’t Chinese.
