well the software depends on what you want to get done

Adobe (Photoshop/Illustrator) and Corel (DRAW/Photo-Paint) are probably the best for photo editing and illustration and all that jazz which is what i think you want.

Paint-Shop Pro from Corel is a great alternative to Photoshop (says the reliable PC Magazine) if you have some sort of hate for Adobe. You can get it for a much cheaper price and though not as plentiful in tools, it has all the basic ones that you will probably need. Around $50 (?).

You could try Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 as well which in my opinion is the better choice. It's much much cheaper than the Adobe Creative Suite Series and has mainly the same set of tools minus the more professional ones which is perfect for beginners. Can get for like around $100 or so

Some free ones if you aren't willing to spend the mulah

GIMP - Great Photoshop Alternative
Inkscape - A program with similar capabilities to Illustrator
Paint.NET - Another Photoshop Alternative for Windows Only
CinePaint - Image Editing software more targeted towards film
Blender - A free open source 3D creation suite (cross-platform)

Well, average Joe's like us anyway. I'm pretty sure all of the companies in the Graphic Design industry pay for their copies xD

- A quick mention, remember that Graphic Design doesn't have to be purely computer based. A friend of mine did an entire piece using spraypaint to mountboard, then scanned it in before adding just a couple of brushes and effects. It's easily my favourite piece in his portfolio now.

I agree with parina. gimp is a good alternative to photoshop. Gimp is for free and easier to learn than photoshop ^-^
Rickysio ( one of our cleaners) feels more comfortable with gimp than with photoshop.

gimp is alright but 2 limiting... it cant even touch photoshop.. it maybe easy2 learn at the strt but when u learn ps u can later do the same tasks much quicker n better.... i mean its free for a reason....

if ur lookin for a program get photoshop cs2 of cs3... the other r alrght but the two is the best... n there r plenty of way2 get it without downloading it... pm me n il tell u how...
