View Full Version : What do you look for in a manga?

Manga is a big thing with me, I carry at least one book wherever I go and I keep up to date with the scans with the stories I like. For me, it needs to have a good flow and if it's choppy and makes no sense I'll put it down or shut the computer. Art is also to me, I understand that the art takes a lot of time and effort, but it has to have a unique flair to it, and if it just seems generic and similar I get bored with it really fast. The action has to be good, and the characters have to have things that are unique about them.

What are your personal manga preferences?

Good art.(Esp. the females.) The manga needs to have some kind of plot from the beginning. i hate mangas where the first arc is just a random thing for the main one. I also hate boring mangas like TENJOU TENGE. Very boring until the later chapters. Besides that, i pretty like every manga. Besides Tenjou Tenge.

when I read the first chapter, I keep reading as if possessed until I get at least 100 chapters in or refresh the scanlators page until they get a new one.

Good examples: Gantz, Air Gear, Berserk.

Basically, a consistent storyline.... Haven't found much mangas that fill that requirement.

Action or Echhi basically. Storyline is always a thumbs up though.

Characters I can feel something for, whether it's love or hate, they have to be interesting enough to make me want to get to know them. You know a bad guy's done right when you find yourself throwing dirty looks at a 2d page. Characterization is a big thing for me.

The art, it's what got me into the whole thing to begin with. My own style really shows it, I can't even draw realistic looking people anymore, they all end up with that anime/manga feel...

I like a story with a little bit of everything thrown in; action, comedy, a little romance, tragedy...like Air Gear. I've got the whole Simca/Ringo/Kururu/Agito+Ikki (he's such a man s**t) thing to satisfy the female in me, but then there's all the action and comedy to make it more interesting.

That's one thing that turns me off. One character getting all the women, I just don't like it. Unless it's something like Negima, where there is basically one guy.

Btw this should be in the manga section.

Decent good story line, character's designs and nice cool theories and techs... perhaps with magic... I don't know how to describe it well but it seems that I do know what I want just by looking at it's sipnosis.

at first i look at the graphics...
if the graphics are pleasing to my eyes...
i read the summary/story line...
if it interests me, i read one chapter then
hopefully it's got organized panels so i can continue reading ^^

there are some cases though that i bear with everything else if the plot interests me so much ^^

a good story line, and I like manga's where the main character is a male that has guts...well ikki is a good example. :)

I don't look for anything. As long as it entertains me, I don't care.

Firstly, the art.
Then, the story (I love touching stories ^^).
And then chracters.
If they're all good I read the manga.
But if there's a manga with a really good storyline then I don't care about the art XD

-Good art is a must (I hate the generic crap).
-Character development and uniqueness is pretty important too.
-Ecchi is ok, as long as it's more than just that.
-If it can make me cry, then it wins. (I usually don't cry)

for example, I really loved the series Ichigo 100%
though undergarments of some sort were flashed almost every chapter, the story was very deep and the characters were developed so well I cried several times throughout the series -_-"

i like manga with a good plot, and character designs.
i don't really mind the art, but i do prefer it to be more detailed.

Always, I look for detailed, good art, first and foremost. I like to learn from the many cool postures and styles from it - and if the summary is interesting or if the manga panels don't look messy, I'll go to the counter and purchase it right off the bat; but yeah, good character designs are a MUST. Usually, I'd like to buy mangas from "years-of-experience" manga artists. However, other than that, if the main character has a weak design or personality, then it'll definitely lose my interest and I'll discontinue buying the volumes until I find inspiration. XP

Plots... umm, well, if the plot is really sweet and heart-tugging, then I wouldn't mind if the art is somewhat irritating to look at (just as long it is easy to read). I keep buying mangas for my favorite characters. XP Like, in "Air Gear", I will willingly support it because of Oh! Great and Agito/Akito (I know, I have some crazy, pathetic reasons) - I'd like to support my favorite artists. At times, I like plots with a taste of "reality", y' know. =3

same here, i also look at the genre, i love manga's with lots of blood and fighting, depending on how good the art of a manga i'll prob. read past 10chs. b4 i quit. i don't like harem's coz the leadin actor is always snobbish or weak. apart from a few which i overlooked like ichigo100% bcuz of it's funny plot.
sum1 should make a topic: best 5 mangas so i can find neu ones 2 read, i stuck readin' sum crappy ones!

now you're my kinda girl ^^
*clings*
it was my cousin who introduced me to ichigo 100%...
i'd admit the strawberry panties got me hooked :p
you know, ichigo 100% had a great impact on my drawing style...
(what? after how many chapters won't you be influenced too?)
i don't mind the undergarments but Satsuki...-_-"
let's just say i had to stay up late and read ichigo 100% only between 12 midnight to sunrise because of her.
the ending just sucked for me though...
i was kinda hoping Manaka would end up with Toujo or no one at all :p

go read chobits too^^ (i will be amazed if you haven't)
*i'm a CLAMP fan :D*

I'm hooked to kind of manga with unique plot.
Something that is very comedic and the storyline has twists.
And oh, the manga that has strong heroine-->can be physically or emotionally ;)

^ YES. Strong heroine~~!! Lolz~!! I prefer seeing girls as the center of attention --> main character and how they kicka..... lolz... which is why i liked maya natsume, hot and a good fighter up till where I've watched the anime that is~

Just wondering if anybody read Clover from CLAMP before? Because I really want to read that... I like the character designs a lot... Saw a trailer from waaay before, it was so good and really touching.... too bad they didn't make it into an anime... *sniff...
