I'd say I do. I mean, I read Penguin Revolution and Hot Gimmick, both of which I believe fall into the Shoujo category. There are probably others I read that are categorized as Shoujo... I don't really know, or go by genres.

Most of the old school people here should remember my obsession with Card Captor Sakura.

My brother reads it just as much as shounen or seinen.
He's subscribed to Shoujo Beat...

Hot Gimmick was cool tho Leave. Although I've no idea how people classify these things... but if anyone brings up Fruits Basket. DEATH. I was told it was the best thing on the planet... and after reading it... I contemplated suicide.

Even if I'm a girl I find few of them very boring. The same story.
Fall in love, doesn't notice her/him,somehow gets his/her attention,go out,a girl/guy appears to steal one of the main character away, then they do it.Full of drama(there are exceptions though)

Meh I read Shoujo sometimes more than Shonen. >.>
Somehow Shoujo becomes more interesting than Shonen at times, but still way too many Shoujo manga do follow a repetitive pattern. Then again Shonen does sometimes, but I never really notice as much as Shoujo.
Ouran High School Host Club is an awesome manga and anime. I enjoyed it a lot, but thought the ending of the anime was a little anti-climatic... I've read Ichigo 100% and Suzuka completely both of which I thought were pretty good. I never finished Fruits Basket even if I tried... <.<
Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles is also a good series, although as of late, I haven't been able to keep up because of all the other manga I read >.<

Really... How they be considered Shonen?

Probably cause they're ecchi and aimed towards males.

Ouran High School Host Club is about the only shoujo I will tolerate. The typical shoujo is an insult to males everywhere: women and men with saucer eyes, men acting like slaves just for a woman to even glance their way, women whining about the same ass problems over and over again...really, its like reading as if a pmsing high school student has taken over the world and creates it in her image. Not that shonen is any better, but at least shonen doesn't treat women like fucking slaves, or sex objects. Oh wait....

For me (being a guy), Bitter Virgin and Vampire Knight are one of my favorites shojo mangas.
Ringo

My other prob with some shoujo mangas is that the main characters are always cute girls at the age of 15 looking for a bf and then somehow they meet they guy they've been dreaming about. The girl's personality is usually quiet, loving, caring, depended on others and can't hurt anyone,it's really so boring because they can cry very easily. They do everything to keep their boyfriend,it makes me wanna punch them so hard or choke them with my own hands. You can't know how happy it makes me when they get tricked by others, that's what you win for being stupid.
As said before there are some really good shoujo mangas, but I personally hate most of the female main characters except few(like Haruhi Fujioka). The one I mostly hate is Yuuki Kurosu from Vampire Knight. She's weak and hurt Zero(something I can't forgive).
The true reason I read shoujo manga is because of the good-looking anime guys.
Anyone read Moe Kare?I wanna discuss about it with someone.

Yuuki isn't my favorite ethier, but I guess she the type of person to drop a guy on a whim for another.
She got a thing w/Kaname that not "normal".

I do enjoy shoujo and the like really almost more than shonen manga. A good one I sumbled upon is Kedamono Demono which has an inetresting theme of a girl who is in love with a guy who's entire family changes genders and personalities at night. Now... sometimes it is difficult to define what really is shoujo... like He is my Master... I consider it a bit in both categories because it has a shoujo feel, but it has the perverted humor of a shonen comedy. Ah well. I really don't pick by genre anyway... if I like a series than I like it. End of story. ^^

His and Her Circumstances aka Kare Kano? I'm not sure if that's considered Shoujo, but I liked that series very much.
I was bored on OneManga the other day and randomly clicked on "The One". Looks girly, but I find it interesting (good comedy). Can't wait for the next volume to come out...

Okay, i never really was a fan of shoujo manga, they were always too cheesy for me and too cliche. but every now and then i found a good shoujo manga which was realistic enough to be loved by me.
but to be honest i rarely read manga any more, even air gear doesnt impress me. >.<
nonetheless i love drawing manga.
and as for guys who like reading shoujo manga... i have nothing against them, far from hating them. XD those guys often are beautifully sensitive and understand women, the type of guy i dig. hahas.

Hm.... Maybe its the sensitive guys who read shoujo?
EDIT: Stupid me for not mentioning this. What makes a manga a shoujo manga?

I must admit, as a girl, I'll find it odd for a guy to read, I dunno... FMWS. It has freaking flowers every page. Unless you're an 8-years-old girl, or old enough for the manga to be nostalgic, reading this sorta thing is just... well, odd.
I think that any manga that has the girl-meeting-boy-and-acting-all-doormat-around-him factor is shoujo manga. Most shoujo manga sucks (for me, of course), so I don't think anyone should read them, but a guy reading something like CCS is one thing, and a guy reading Fushigi Yuugi is very, very different thing. So it really spends on the level of Maru su-ness and/or the number of retarded flowers/pastel bubbles per page.

08-10-2009, 03:36 PM
Um... Aside from having never read any of those, what is FMWS? I don't know the name of that one.
I've read maybe five manga or so... um... Air Gear, Naruto, bit of Kuro Kami, Fruits Basket, Absolute Boyfriend, and some Bleach. Oh, and Soul Eater!
Fruits Basket and Absolute Boyfriend are both Shoujo, right?
If yeah, then YAY!!! I actually see the difference.
I think I really just read manga for the random scenes of violence, be it giant explosions, people being cut open, or just one person randomly smashing another with a punch or a stick or something.

Oh, that's so cute, you remind me of me when I was like 14.
Fruits basked is shoujo, but not a typical one, since it actually has more then the heroin + love interest characters (usually in shouja manga the other chars are there just as plot devices, its actually kinda sad). Absolute Boyfriend is closer to average shoujo, but less "kyaaa~~~ What should I do?? I like him sooo much but i'm too much of a loser to do anything about it" then normal. Some shoujjo manga are not about romance [like Skip Beat, that's a very very funny manga] bu most of them are about lame, useless heroin and some stupid, cliche love story. Naturally, not the thing a typical guy will be very interested in - or any girl with half a brain (sadly, not enough of those are around).
FMWS = Full Moon wo Sagashite. The kinda manga every 12 year old like. The mangaka wrote alot more titles, all basically with the same chars (they all look the same too) and they sell like crazy. Check it out on manga fox or something, and then you'll know why guys don't read shoujo manga.
Also, how come you didn't read Full Metal Alchemist? Its a known classic. Ah, back in my days, when I just started watching the anime, it was still pretty new, and no one knew about it... But it ended up being one of the most popular anime and manga ever, and for good reason. Also the anime has Paku Romi as seiyuu, I love her so much (I remeber hearing her voice in Shaman King, boy was I shocked. Also you gotta try Shaman King, its very different then the dub, and the manga is a bit better, if a bit corny. Pretty classic shounen, in a good way.)

Ak! forgot DeathNote. That was good.
Um... Just never bothered to look at Full Metal Alchemist, but Shaman King was kind of ruined for me by the whole when I a bit younger and less of a critical idiot I would waste my saturday mornings watching the americanized kid's anime version.

aH, DN. I may be the only person on earth that just didn't like that manga. It was odd - it started out really good, but when it went from "killing bad guys for my slightly fucked up ideals" to "Battle of Wits OF DOOM" I kinda lost interest. Plus, all the char felt really not real to me - it had it own inner logic, but I couldn't really get into it because it was all so, I dunno, odd. It just didn't feel real to me.
You know, I never watched the dubbed version of Shaman King, even though it was a big hit here in Israel? I didn't have foxkids, so no SK for me. But I so a poster of Yoh when I was like 11, and was all "ZOMG HE'S SO CUTE I LOOOOOVE HIM" and checked on wikipedia who he is, and then I ended up reading the manga because it took less time to download it. I once caught a dubbed episode, it was really weird, they changed practically everything - it was almost as bad as Naruto (they tried to broadcast Naruto here, but with all the white screensof censorship, you barely could get what's happening, do it didn't hit well. Figures, really.)
Its kinda like the differences between Yuugi ou first anime and the second one - weird psycho show and a card game show. A dub is one heck of a deadly weapon - can you see dubbed AG?
Silverseeker
08-11-2009, 03:17 PM
Dubbed AG? Might of at one point. I just read the manga though.
Well, now I'll probably go ahead and look at Shaman King and Full Metal Alchemist. This is rather interesting.

I havent really tried reading any shoujo. i mostly just read shounen, and more recently a lot more seinen cause im sick of the blah blah blah super hero main character. the one shoujo i did try to read was called a thousand years of snow but i got about 3 chapters in and started reading something else instead. was pretty basic vampire romance. the guy vampire doesnt feed on humans and the girl falls in love with him but he wants her to stay away and he continuously refuses to turn her into a vampire and stuff. would be more interesting if i didnt hate the romance genre for all its predictability.

Look now, bro. Genre != demographic.
Shoujo from the title is about the genre of Nanoha: Mahou Shoujo. The demographic, which audience Nanoha is aimed at, is seinen: > 18 men. There is no such criterion that there needs to be sex to make a series seinen. Just look at stuff like Minami-ke, kiddy friendly as hell but still considered seinen.
Mahou Shoujo series always gather little girls and older males as their viewer base. Nanoha was a Mahou Shoujo specially made to cater to those older fans.
Also StrikerS was a slight trainwreck. A's > MSLN > StrikerS
Can't wait for movie though, shit's probably awesome.
GravityZero
02-25-2010, 05:09 AM
Mmhm, so what if we interpret the topic to mean genre instead of demographic (which was my interpretation to begin with). Then, Nanoha certainly qualifies as a shoujo that a lot of guys like, and are proud to be fans of.
And seriously man, StrikerS was fucking awesome. I was dick bored through A's waiting to get into StrikerS because adult!Fate is fapworthy and I like than more than borely staring at 8 year olds... oh fuck nvm, I know why you hate StrikerS now. Well, how do you like ViVid? (aka repeat season 1 with lesbo parents and a 10 year old lead WITH CHROMATIC EYES)
EvoFag, former Head Faggot of Faggot's Lair said the Nanoha movie was "ZOMG PERFECT". I take that to mean there's enough loliservice for the most hardcore pedobear to have a full week's worth of ammo for mind-blowing faps. In other words, you'll love it. I still hate that doucher, my rage won't subside unless I personally fuck with him somehow. <_< UGH, FUCK HIM.
Topic: Point made. From here I wield truth: Nanoha is by genre definition a shoujo, and an excellent pick for any manly man, I watched it with my roommates around. Furthermore, Vampire Knight might qualify for the demographic definition, and is pretty easy to enjoy. Inuyasha as well if it didn't drag on for a billion fucking chapters. Lastly, my personal definition of the seinen genre, not demographic, begins with sex. It cannot be seinen with a sex scene or an attempted/successful rape occurring. The demographic definition doesn't apply to that. Shows like Code Geass and Death Note were obviously for older men, and had no such scenes.

There is only one definition for seinen: targeted at older males. Be it a harem, gorefilled action, ordinary romance, satire, slice of life or whatever. There is no such genre as seinen. Seinen only means it's targeted at older males. Genre is a completely different thing, which tells you what kind of story it is.
Nanoha: Mahou Shoujo genre, Seinen demographic.
Hidamari Sketch: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jznc645X8Nc) Slice of Life genre, Seinen demographic.
Chii's sweet home: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jq33dzbO840) Comedy genre, Seinen demographic.
Minami-ke: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFD-PVIbDyc) Slice of Life genre, Seinen demographic.
Just because it's seinen doesn't mean it will have "mature" or darker themes. Those are all seinen, and there is no sex, gore or violence above normal shounen level. There are a lot of seinen manga with those particular features, but they aren't criteria for seinen.
And Death Note was serialized in Shounen Jump, so yeah...

A's was fucking amazing. The pacing was perfect, the characters were great, the drama was well executed, fights made me shed a tear as a mecha lover and everything was superb. The pacing of StrikerS however was really off at times and some of the new characters were just gay. Also needed more Hayate love. Delicious Kana Ueda voiced booty got shafted a bit. Not cool man, not cool. StrikerS only reached A's level of awesome towards the end, and that was mostly battle orientated too. Subaru was fun though, blatant lesbian GaoGaiGar ripoff and all. StrikerS would have been better as a shorter series, like the two first seasons.
ViVid didn't really catch my interest. Tried reading a bit, stopped at chapter 3.

Bitter Virgin is more seinen, and the Aesop is inspirational to girls at the same time - not younger ones, because it does feature rape and two attempted rapes. BV's real target's is probably older ladies, aka josei, and the author based it on her miscarriage.
Nanoha's based on a hentai VN. Think about that.

Nanoha's based on a hentai VN. Think about that. I checked and Bitter Virgin is indeed a seinen manga. It was serialized in Young GanGan, a seinen magazine. And the fact that the protagonist is male was a slight indicator already.
And about Nanoha being based on an eroge, that's kinda true. But it's VERY loosely based, as Nanoha is a side character in Triangle Heart 3 which focuses on her brother. MSLN and TH3 only share some characters, but otherwise they're completely different.

Noted, but the eroge undertones in the first season are way too obvious to overlook. Within the first episode Miyuki-hottie gave her brother-cousin 4 deliberately sultry stares, icwutudidther.
In TH3, Nanoslut is Chrono's bitch. And Chrono's ebil. Imagine a StrikerS-era TH revolving around them and fap.
