You were worried about posting these?! You're so goood!!! I love it, you've got a good sense of pose and costume design, and an interesting aspect of realism to cartoon-esque drawings. Gotta lurve that Black Cat tattoo on the chick's chest :P
Keep posting more!!

Hey my first time seeing ya art. Not bad, but you should observe some effects like how the clothes fold and some shadows due to the folds or the light. Yeah, like Leave said... You got to curve that Black Cat tatoo a little. Wait... a female version of Black Cat?
Anyway, over all... it's just nice. ^^ Hope to see more from ya.
PS: I do like those artists that you admired especially Tetsuya Nomura (of FF and Kingdom Hearts fame) and Hyung Tae Kim. They are one of my favs.

A few updates

WIP of Tsunade, from Naruto
I tried to portray her in a different light
from sexy/seductive to more sporty/peppy
of course, certain things were still carried over
(hairstyle, forehead stone, breasts)
I doubt I'll ever finish this one...no real motivation to do so...

I've struggled with anatomy for a while >.<

ummm...wow. Nice work here. would you happen to mind drawing my Rpc?
the Description in the Bio is inacurate now so Ima just leave a spoiler with the description.
Overall: Kain is a tall young man of around 17. His years of Kendo and trekking have rendered him rather fit but not outwardly buff. His skin has a light tan and is only a shade darker then the normal.
Head: Kain's normal trademark is his hair. For reason sons unknown, his hair is over 90 percent pure white. The 10 percent remaining is streaks of silver. he either Leaves his hair to run free, or Puts it in a pony Tail
Chest: he normally wears a simple Black or white Undershirt to cover himself as well as a dress shirt of any color with its sleeves rolled up so that the come just above his elbows. Neither the shirt nor the dress shirt has any logos. He wears a worn leather drawstring pouch around his neck. This must never be covered in the slightest.
Arms: his arms are only seen below the elbow. What you can see is that his elbows are clear but the have a tattoo of a blue ring of flames on a solid ring of Black. These flames pointed up his arm. They go all the way around his wrist as if he had a bracelet of flames. These extend from the base of his wrist to a few inches up. He wears one ring on his right hand. It’s made of dull silver. It has roman numerals going around. Starting from one and ending at twelve.
Waist: he wears a black sweater around his waist. Note: the dress shirt is not tucked into the sweater but the Shirt is. The sweater also has no logos.
Pants/legs: he is normally wearing a pair of well worn jeans with several scuffs and stains butt as of yet, no rips. The scuffs are around the knees and the stains are mostly around the ass. They are pretty much oil and grass stains from working on planes and skidding into the, well the grass. The jeans are a varying colors but normally either white or blue. You can not see any part of his socks.
Feet: a Simple Pair of Black shoes is all that he wears when ever he is not on Trek. if he is on trek, they are black with blue flames being blown backwards towards the ankle.
no matter what tho, I like your work.

Update August 06, 2008
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x192/alexhsieh_wtf/sketches/ChineseDress.jpg
I wanted to practice drawing legs, so I tried a different pose.
I guess the theme for this piece was something like "10% tip at a Chinese Restaurant"
Neither her GuanYu polearm (hurray for finally being able to use knowledge of Mandarin to do something) nor her anti-tank rifle (dunno if it looks legit - I made it up as I went) are weapons that can be held in one arm, but that's irrelevant >.<
I had seen a site with tons of traditional Chinese and Japanese dresses, and was awed by how beautiful both the dresses and the models were.
So I was inspired to draw one of my own.
*wishes she could do subtle dragon and phoenix patterns like those found on the real dresses*
and yes, those are pantyhose, just horribly crosshatched...
if anyone's got tutorials/guides for how to shade pantyhose, I'd be thrilled to have some educational material X3
In any case, crit away!

Very nice. Proportions are a little difficult because of the position, but they look exceptional. The back of the head looks a little flat, but that could just be the way the hair is styled. Some of the lines could use a little touching up (the stand for the gun looks a little confused). The expression, while somewhat intimidating, is also kind of bland, especially considering she's wielding a combination of heavy artillery and two-handed weapons effortlessly. As for the pantyhose.....Because they're made of such fine "fabric", cross hatching may not be the way to go. Alternatively, if you have a very fine tip pencil and a lot of patience, you could delicately cross-hatch it to suggest the texture. Otherwise, a smooth gradient blend might be better.

Update August 07, 2008
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x192/alexhsieh_wtf/sketches/Salaryman.jpg
I tried a new way of sketching, following Hyung Tae-Kim's tutorial that he put out for a Canadian art magazine (I found it online somewhere).
I normally start by drawing the head, and then finish the head and use that as a reference to do the rest of the body. However, this time I sketched out the entire thing very roughly, then started by refining the faces, then body, etc, and then coming back and finishing both. It was a new approach I think I want to adopt, so hopefully it'll help me improve or at least put me in the right direction.
The theme for this was "Working Class Hero," a term I heard on TV O_o
I doubt I understood it correctly, but whatever, it made for a fun pic.
It started out as being a medieval era piece, but her armor/outfit ended up resembling a school uniform, and so I just went with it and took the piece in a more modern direction.
And don't ask why she has a gunshot wound...high school is more vicious than you think!
@Xyphrous: I understand what you mean about the blandness in the face (I notice it now in hindsight), as well as the awkwardness of the gun stand. As for the pantyhose, after asking around online, people said to use a combination of very fine crosshatching in a gradient-like pattern >.>. I guess that's legitimate...
@Sendo: Yeah I had to redraw the face the first time because I realized I had screwed up positioning, but I guess the lips are still weird. As for the feet, I usually skimp out on drawing feet because the page usually ends before I get that far down, so I guess I know where I need work XD

Update August 11, 2008
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x192/alexhsieh_wtf/sketches/TsunadeWIP.jpg
It's a WIP of Tsunade from the series Naruto.
I've been continuing to use that new approach to my sketches mentioned in the post above, which I'm becoming more comfortable with as I go.
I've also been practicing more fluid motions in my poses.
This shall remain a WIP until I can think of the right outfit to fit the mood.
But the problem lies in that I don't know what kind of mood I want >.>
She looks like she's running, but she could also be holding something.
Maybe I'll fit the mood to the outfit, still not sure.
Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Criticism also makes Vicious a happy cat X3
...hmmm...her midsection looks a bit too slim to support her twins >.>
Anyway,
Once I feel comfortable enough with this new method of sketching, I'll get to the requests list.
@Reincanation: Thanks for the compliment, I've been practicing folds and drapery a lot lately as well =D
@Smoosh: Yeahhhh I can see what you mean by her being too stiff....maybe she has abs and lower back muscles of steel...?
>w< b
@Urth: I probably should've said "her GuanYu's polearm," since I don't know the name specifically. Thanks for the input XD
I'll definitely get to your's soon, since you're at the top of the list...sorry for being so slooowwww~
@Sendo: Thanks for the compliment and the misunderstanding which pushed me in this direction. =D
until next time...uuuuFUUUUUUUUUUUUUU~
Xyphrous
08-11-2008, 07:01 PM
Well, since it is still in the WIP stage (and early on, for that matter), there isn't much to constructively criticize. However, some minor suggestions: You noted the thin midsection and I agree. Also, her posture does suggest running, maybe not sprinting, but a brisk trot. If she is holding something then the clenched hand is fine, otherwise the hand should be open. Running with clenched hands tightens the muscles of the arms unnecessarily and can cause fatigue, something Tsunade would probably be familiar with[/stickling for realism]. The torso also seems a bit too long, around 3.5 heads, which would make her overall height around 7-8 heads since legs are longer than torsos. Proportions seem sound otherwise, though. That's about all I have to say since, again, this is a WIP. Keep it coming!
Vicious
08-11-2008, 10:37 PM
hmm....I guess to fit character, the torso length would have to be fixed, yeah
but also, breasts have to be the size of her head, if not bigger >.>
looks like I've got my work cut out for me...

Update August 12, 2008
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x192/alexhsieh_wtf/sketches/Tsunade.jpg
Finished the WIP above.
I was inspired by a conversation about the Olympic volleyball teams in the shoutbox, and also watched some beach volleyball, so this is the result.
The mood was supposed to be relaxed, yet powerful.
I also made her breasts bigger, to stay canonical >.>
Embarrassingly enough, I realized that I have a lot of trouble drawing cleavage well...
-_-"
Originally she had a full bikini set, but I opted to go with a undershirt type, with the text "Killer Queen" (because ending a point in volleyball is called a 'kill').
Also I had been looping that song by Queen, so the name stuck.
She kept her bikini bottom, because I wanted to practice drawing larger thighs.
Overall, the purpose was to practice the muscle groups, in this more "active" pose.
And to draw a supersexy-type body....fufufufufufuu....
>w< b
@Xyphrous: Thanks for the input, especially with regards to her midsection. Her hand was in a testing phase, so just a block in the WIP. If you look closely, you can see small markings for finger extensions, so it was just tentative.
Xyphrous
08-12-2008, 03:43 PM
Very nice....>_> *moves on*
The definition is very good from the waist up and the position is dynamic. Tsunade's unique physique aside, though, the obliques could use a little more definition since she appears to be twisting or setting up for a serve. Her left arm also appears a little too cylindrical, the bicep should be contracted since she's lifting her forearm and the deltoid should pop a little more as it lifts her arm as a whole. The wrappings on the hands also look a little confusing, since they seem to go from thin bands to strings as they near her fingers (not that anyone would wrap their hands like that for volleyball, but artistic license is presumed here).
From the waist down, and I don't know if you did this to emphasize the musculature above it, things get a little indistinct. Even fuller thighs still have definition and it looks like her glutes and quads just meld into each other, as opposed to being very toned as they are in professional volleyball players. They just seem a little too curvy and puffed up. The bottom part to her outfit could also use some tension lines to accent the motion of the muscles underneath.
To be really nit-picky, volleyballs are made of 6 larger panels made up of of 3 thin rectangular panels, sort of like an inflated cube. The one she's holding reminds me of a hybrid rubber-band/volleyball. And the brand wouldn't be stamped across a seam. Hope this helped. *looks at the new variation on his username* >_<

Update August 21, 2008
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x192/alexhsieh_wtf/sketches/portraitpractice.jpg
Did some sketching in the old sketchbook to practice drawing portraits, with Loomis's guidelines, as well as work on shading with the help of a kneaded eraser (finally got one >.>)
I suck at shading, so focus on that -_-"
Not much else to say, so crit away!
@Xyphrous: I see what you mean by the leg muscles not being defined, but I was a little tentative, since too much definition would take away from the sexy image I was trying to convey. Too much muscle is kinda scary, unless that happens to float your boat. And the volleyball thing I didn't know, and didn't bother to look up X3
Xyphrous
08-21-2008, 08:31 PM
Hmm...shading....hmm.....
The shading, as you mentioned, needs work. I'll start with the guy. There appears to be too much shading going on with him, if the little sun you drew is the point where light is coming from. the lower parts of his face, on his left side especially, should be pretty clean, unless he has a certain skin tone, and shading should be done very lightly on the features of that side. Now, I'm assuming there's ambient light where he is, so if you were trying to go for a starker relief, then pass this by. Here, the shading seems almost uniform, as if the right side of his face were flat. The shadows should be deeper around the eye socket and the side of the nose, then taper out for the cheek (i noticed he seems not to have cheekbones from the way the shading looks), and then darken again as it curls around his jaw. The jaw itself needs to blend gradually into a darker shade. His nose could also use a thin strip of highlight. The hat looks alright, although I wonder if his hat is vinylized or supposed to be a bright color (white?) because the highlight spot on it is brighter than his face. The shading is almost a little too smooth here, especially if you want to give the cap texture. Some lines should reach into the highlight spot, like highlighting hair, to suggest the fabric type covering. The bill of the hat should actually make a sharply darkened area across his forehead and upper face, not jagged, but definitely noticable and more sudden, rather than blended darkness. Hair seems fine form-wise, but even then, it needs to be darker on the side of his head that's shielded from the light.
Moving on to the lady....
Using the sun as a reference, the first thing i notice is that her hair has no highlight...very unusual. Even if the light is somewhat behind her, there should at least be a patch where the hair is reflective. The same thing applies to the lenses of her glasses, there should a bright spot of reflected light somewhere. Her face, like her male counterpart's, needs a bit more shading to hint at it's form. A spot of highlight on her cheek would work, if the light is in front of her, which it seems to be, along with a tapered spot from the tip of her nose to her eyeline. The right side of her face needs to be shaded more deeply along the cheek and jawline (soft, rounded features aside, she needs some definition!) and, again, the eye socket. The neck needs to be shaded to show where her jaw comes out, and, I'm not sure if it's just me, but the neck looks overlong in that knit turtleneck....As an aside, her ear appears to be somewhat lower on her skull, since most glasses have the hinges anchored on the upper part of the frame, and here they're around the middle, which suggests that it's quite a bit lower than the browline.
I'm going to go on a bit of stretch and try to analyze the technique from what I can see...bear with me on this. It seems that the shading was done with strokes that were all in generally the same direction, at roughly the same pressure. Here, like cross-hatching, you should add some strokes that go in a different direction, and try to use different amounts of pressure, rather than repeated strokes to achieve different shades. I'm trying to take into account the texture of the paper detracting from the smoothness of the shading, but even so....
Well, there's that...now I can return to my cold ramen.

Damn that is some pretty funky surrealist stuff you've got there. Good stuff though, and besides the proportions which you pointed out there isn't much to critique. Although, it's hard to determine gender from the faces. Most of these seem to be doodles, as you say, so they're not really finished and thus I can't really comment on them. If I had some idea of where you were trying to go with some of it then perhaps I could give some more critique.

seemed to me, that It went, Boys in the first picture. then a girl. then a boy, and the last one was a girl.
Im pretty sure about the last one and the third one. the last one, seems to have breasts and the lips look more pronounced.
and the third one seems to have some sort of doodled on abs so Im going to go and guess its a boy.
the rest just kinda...seemed like their gender to me.

Update November 16, 2008
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x192/alexhsieh_wtf/sketches/RPC_0001.jpg
Quick little RPC sketch.
I just decided to create a character.
Somewhat "fox-like"
Dunno what her name's going to be.
@Xyphrous: I didn't really have much purpose in drawing them aside from emptying out my brain, so it's fine XD
@Sendo: I'll definitely have to work on that for the future, though pretty boys are a lot of fun >w< b
@tonember: Thanks for the compliment. I do like funky every now and then
@Parina: Thanks for the support, Pari! I can't draw shoujo faces for my life, so we're even in that respect X3
@Reaper: Thanks, though ironically it started with a hand. Then a box. Then the rest came from the depths of my mind O_o.
Very slow updates, I know.
Applying to college is a pain.
I'll finish sketch requests soon!

hmm, iv noticed that most of the faces you draw are all very hard.
not as in complex, but as in...ridged...
ok in someguy faces, but looks a bit odd in girl faces.
aside from that, its still your turn to brak the curse of Kain

Update December 18, 2008
*removed*
another piece for the pokemon thingy - Ninetails, pt.2?
went for elegance over sexiness this time
last time was more western, this time more eastern
background I just got lazy
and yes, her arms are hidden underneath those layers
hair, clothing, pretty much everything about the piece was a pain in the butt, but it was fun to see how detailed I could get.
though I don't have any idea what real kimonos look like >.>
@sendo: well the edges in the face probably come from studying the plates of the face, and so while it may be a bit hard, I'll continue to work to smooth it out.
and I'll get to Kain, don't worry DX

hmm...on second thought, the face looks too animalistic and doesn't work out well....
I'll have to fix that sometime DX

Update February 21, 2009
woohoo for updating like bimonthly....
been busy with schoolwork and stuff...yeah....
ANYWAYS
character sketches for a one-shot I plan to create for this comics class I signed up for (it was free...DOUBLE-LUCKY!)
Crits and Comments would be even more greatly appreciated for this project, since the final result will be published >.<
Oh, and names for suggestions would be very helpful, since I haven't the foggiest idea.
Main Character, The Lover:
The idea was to have a semi-androgynous pretty-boy, who is cool and reserved. Always in control. I originally had his hairstyle more rounded, but then he seemed wayyy to girly, even for my tastes.(I'd prefer bishounen instead of a woman, at least for story purposes X3) He's an assassin, so professional attire was a must. And I wanted to give a foxy feel.
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x192/alexhsieh_wtf/sketches/character1.jpg
The Beloved:
Not much to say. This is the character I had the most trouble with. She's supposed to be a pure/innocent angelic girl. Which meant a non-SEXYSEXY-type body >.< I'll redo this if I get enough new suggestions, since I know this one really needs work.
http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x192/alexhsieh_wtf/sketches/character3-1.jpg
The Father of the Beloved, and Mob Boss:
The father character was supposed to be an imprisoned, gaunt figure who had all his life's energy sapped out of him. He works the books for a crime syndicate, so he had to have some level of class (at least in his dress)
The mob boss character was based of the Boondock Saints mob boss, and every other italian mafia movie. Hair slicked back, vest with shirt, sleeves rolled up, buttons undone to show hairy chest, and cigar. Good times.

The Mother of the Main Character:
She is the mother of an assassin, and also a member of a notorious hitman family. Therefore she's got to be badass. And sexy. So I took two different approaches. The first is an old school Yakuza Ane-san type of character, very traditionally Japanese. The second is a more western approach, with her wealth out for everyone to see (see pearl necklace and fur jacket). And a pump shotgun instead of a sword.
Style 1

Style 2

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And a WIP of Chun-Li, mostly done for practice since anatomy of lower body is one of my major weaknesses. Commemorating getting Street Fighter IV in the mail yesterday. Hurray.

I'll put clothes on her afterwards.
Err...more updates to come as I work on the pages of the one-shot...

New stuff I guess
Went on a hiatus from drawing and everything for a few weeks and stuff because of finals, and tried to get back into it recently
Been trying to work more on female legs, since they're really important to the overall feel/sexiness of the character fufufufufu

took a long time lol
I was looking at the picture of the mother of a main character 2 that u did in a previous post and i was like "omg its Japanese Balalaika!"
I like the body proportioning u do, i can never figure out the body to shoulder ratio but you do it so well, how do u do it?
Vicious
06-30-2009, 11:38 AM
hahaha the japanese balalaika was more or less the feel I was aiming for, actually!
and to be honest, that's the one proportion I don't check - since it varies for everyone. I just draw it based off feel, obv guys have wider shoulders than girls.
The only set ratio I can think of is womens' shoulders are about as wide as their hips.
The torso width I just learned from practice, you just figure it out eventually =D
