Koko’s particular pair of ATs are made from black, high abrasion resistance rubber that is both protective and flexible. He sports black, green and yellow laces, with a Jamaican flag design imprinted onto them; they remind him of his family, back in Kingston, Jamaica. He bought them in order to do deliveries from his Jamaican-themed restaurant and bar.

LOOKS

“Sorry, No picture yet!”

Eyes: Hazel Brown
Hair: Black, Dreadlocked.
Skin: Black
Height/Weight: 1.85m / 85kg
Blood-type: A

Overall Appearance:

Koko almost exactly resembles the a young Bob Marley, except that his dreadlocks and facial hair are a little different. His dreadlocks are all interwoven, with all sorts of beads and rings, to form one big ‘mega-lock’ which runs all the way down the centre of his spine to knee-level. When relaxing, he normally wears his hair tied up into a large bun, several time bigger than his head in a large wrap or tam. He also has a small soul-patch goatee and a five ear piercings; two rings in the left ear, three rings in the right ear. He walks as if he’s always strolling, which deceives the eye to his broad shoulders and strong upper body. It’s all about imagining him leisurely walking down some sunny little dirt track road on the isle of Jamaica, with a big, happy smile on his face; his laid back attitude really shows in the way he moves and behaves.

The same can be said about his clothing style, a lot of loosely fitting shirts and vests as well as long basketball shorts. He only wears trousers when he’s working behind the bar or in the kitchen of his café, named “Kafé Koko”. Generally, most comfortable and airy clothing is good when he’s not working with the food he serves in his little downtown eatery, which serves his award-winning, homemade ‘Solomon Gundy’, called “Solomon Brown”. It’s also one of the most renowned reggae music hot-spots in Tokyo, which hosts a weekly music event every Sunday from “8 ‘till late”. He’s very easy going and treats everyone with the same friendly respect, relaxed and un-confrontational body language. He brings a relaxed, calming mood to any situation or scenario.

PERSONALITY

Likes: Reggae, Ska and Jump-up, Jerk Chicken, Rastafarianism and Sunny weather.
Dislikes: Disrespect, Littering, Impatience and Cold, wet weather.
Hobbies: Cooking, Singing, Basketball and Track and Field.
Fears: His restaurant going bust.
Goals: No regrets, be happy and live your dreams.

Overall Personality:

As you would expect, Koji is a stereotypical Rastafarian, very socially-relaxed and open-minded, always happy to try new experiences. Japanese people being very polite and fixated with social-etiquette often do not understand his unbelievably lacklustre attitude to the social norm convention of manners. One such example of this would be the use of his own version of formal honorifics; “-missy” or “-shah”, rather than “-chan” or “-kun”. But that isn’t to say he’s rude; quite the opposite! He’s very charming and articulate, sometimes even lyrically so; despite his staunch Jamaican accent, funny sayings and sometimes perverse sense of humour his general aura of kind gentleness radiates out in all directions and crosses most, if not all, language barriers. He’s very rarely disgusted by something to the point where he’ll ball up a fist, although he could be accused of being a ‘have a go hero’, should the chance come up to do a good deed.

It’s also not uncommon to see Koji, lost in thought whilst happily singing away to himself, a sign that he’s enjoying whatever it is he’s doing, whether it be entertaining company or cooking up some jerk chicken for a customer order. He’s also very wise, and it’s not unordinary to see him deep in conversation about any given issue with a complete stranger; a direct effect of his open, empathetic nature coupled with his fresh, alternative perspective on life. Being a business man it was vital that he learn Japanese, but thanks to his upbringing is capable of communicating clearly with Patois and also English, having lived most of his life on the ‘motherland’, a place often referenced when he comes up with one of his many catchphrases or humorous utterances.

A kind, oracle-like presence, with a huge smile and a welcoming embrace, “Happiness is always on the menu!”

HISTORY

Birthplace: Kingston, Jamaica
D.O.B: 9:42am, 3rd June, 1981
Parents: Delonn & Tequisha Brown
Siblings: Amos (28, 3rd eldest sibling), Tamila (32, Elder sibling), Tanesa (25, Youngest sibling)

Overall History:

Koji, or “Koko” as he’s lovingly known by his family, was born and raised around the streets of Kingston amidst the sounds of Shabba Ranks and Chaka Demus during the emergence of genre’s such as ‘Ragga’, ‘Dancehall’ and ‘Dub’ in the 1980’s. Music fascinated him, even from a young age, and he would often be seen singing and dancing along the side of the road, happily enjoying himself in his own little world. It was also in his premature years that he was introduced to cooking, that being something that was shared with the whole family, irrespective of age or gender.

He’s the second eldest of a set of four siblings; Tamila, the oldest and most protective sibling, Amos, his younger brother and comrade in arms and finally Tanesa, the youngest and most spoilt of the four Brown children, are all capable of cooking up a storm in the kitchen because of their shared experiences with their parents during childhood. It’s an exploit that has got them quite far in life; both he and his brother own their own eating establishments, Amos’ restaurant is located in Kingston and it’s a place that he eagerly wants to visit upon returning home to see his mother and father from time to time. Apart from these two things, his upbringing was otherwise perfectly normal and quite boring, at least for a Jamaican that is.

He was first introduced to Rastafarianism at a young age, his father being a rather purist Zionist, and he’s really embraced the idea as well, just not to the same level as his father. Koji believes more in the happy, natural side of the world being a good and positive thing rather than any black supremacist messages that might be muddled in with the message. He lives every day with a positive mental outlook on the world, and will always try to do the right thing, even if it’s the more painful option. He’s honest, but never harsh with his words and criticism. Helpful rather than a hindrance, because “every little thing’s gon’ be alright”!

The opportunity to come to Japan and cook came when a travelling Japanese tourist who just happened to be a famous food critic in Tokyo, came and ate in the restaurant where he was working. Rather than simply praising the chef, he asked to meet him personally; the rest has just been like a dream, even though he’s hardly one to rush into a situation without considering things. With the money he had earned working two jobs at the same time, coupled with a large investment by a large Japanese restaurant chain that was looking to branch out into foreign food eateries, he started up ‘Kafé Koko’ and to this day continues to work hard managing his dream bistro.

EXTRA

Role-play Sample:

These things were awfully hard to handle, having never even tried to roller-skate before this was completely alien to him. Talk about trying to run before you could walk, this was like trying to sprint before he could crawl. Talking of crawling, he was currently doing a lot of that, coupled with falling on his ass and losing his patience! The smoking garden of ‘Kafé Koko was hardly the ideal location to start out learning, what with customers coming in at this time of the day. They were all regulars though, one and all seemed rather content to sit and watch him play the fool instead of complaining about there being no chef to cook them up a nice jerk chicken ramen, a favourite amongst his Japanese clientele.

Regular bouts of laughter seemed to sporadically flare up, whenever he just seemed to get his feet and balance, he would suddenly jerk forward, only to have a foot fly forward in front of him. What followed next was the sound of raucous laughter and a loud thud as his gluteus-maximus hit the wooden decking of the authentically decorated veranda area with a sudden impact. “You’d neva’ get ol’ me in a pair’a those, boy! Yahahaaa, ya’ look like a fool!” bellowed Benton, an old, silver dreadlocked Jamaican ex-pat who would often frequent the smoking area. “Shut it, ya’ stinkin’ ol’ goat!” he retorted, regaining his feet whilst his insult met only with more mirth and merriment en masse. “Get back in tha kitchen where ya got real talent, boy! Yahah!” he responded, taking another sip of his rum and coke drink whilst smoking his hand-rolled ‘cigarette’.

He’d never tell the old man, but he kind of agreed with him; he was much more comfortable on the hearth than he was on a set of four motor-driven, rubber wheels. That wasn’t going to stop him though, especially when he could potentially start delivering to addresses within a couple mile radius of his place, which would help profits no end. Half-staggering, half-dragging himself in to a chair next to Benton, he dragged a foot up at a time and clicked the lock mechanism in to place so that he could stand more normally. “Ya kno’ Bent’n, these things got real potential to make a great deliv’ry service. Jus’ got to find ma’ feet firs’.” Benton immediately stifled a chuckle, “Tha’only thing you’ll find on those things is your ass skiddin’ alon’ the floor like a dog wi’ worms! Yahahaha-hohoho!” He couldn’t help but join in with the laughter, Benton was a good friend; that, and a regular customer and he could hardly disagree. He certainly had a sore ass already!
